Boron supplementation is known to increase ionised magnesium concentrations in the blood.
Horse owners have reported benefits from feeding as little as 1.5 gram (approx. ½ teaspoon) so our recommendation is to start on a low dose and increase in small increments if necessary. It's not palatable so would be a good idea to start with a small amount.
Magnesium and boron can benefit headshaking horses according to researchers at the University of California, Davis.
A study that was reported in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, found magnesium in combination with boron had the most benefit, 64% reduction in headshaking compared to the horses fed hay only in the study.
The dose rate of boron citrate in the study was 40mg per kilo bodyweight which would equate to a 20 gram daily dose for a 500kg horse. (Source https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jvim.15499 )
As people often prefer one form of magnesium over another, the ability to add boron separately will be an advantage for them.
